Exploring Passionate Practitioners Webinar Series
Global Citizenship Education (GCE) is gaining momentum worldwide, as evidenced by initiatives like PISA’s new global competence tests and the inclusion of GCE in Target 4.7 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal on Education. Across the state, Queensland educators are introducing GCE into their classrooms, actively engaging students from kindergarten to year 12, with outstanding results.
Join the Global Learning Centre (GLC) as we re-visit our passionate practitioners for an update on their work and the exciting impact it’s having on them and their students.

The Global Learning Centre continues the conversation with our three Action Research participants. In session one, join Charles Mackenzie-Smith from St Paul’s School Bald Hills in conversation about an initiative to foster global competence.
Charles is the creator of the school’s Our World Languages (OWL) Club. For one hour each week after school students have an opportunity to experience cultures and languages with volunteer parents fluent in Hindi, Mandarin, Italian, Spanish, Auslan and Afrikaans. Through Action Research Charles has been exploring how effective the OWLs Club is in developing an understanding of different cultural perspectives in relation to everyday experiences. Charles will share further insights into this project and its impact. |
The Global Learning Centre continues the conversation with our three Action Research participants. In session two, we catch up with Luke Royes from St Patrick’s College Shorncliffe about fostering a school-wide ecologically sustainable mindset.
Luke is the coordinator of the school’s Stewardship Committee. The group has planned a program to tackle school-generated food waste, which links student learning with local residents, Brisbane City Council and SANDBAG community group. Through Action Research Luke has explored the efficacy of the Stewardship Committee to promote a shift in school culture and everyday waste management practices. Luke will provide updates on this collaborative project. |
The Global Learning Centre continues the conversation with our three Action Research participants. In session three, we join staff from Kirwan State High School about a program for Year 8 students to develop international mindedness and socially conscious leadership.
Kirwan worked to deliver the Human Technologies curriculum originally developed by the International College of Hong Kong. Year 8 students investigated developmental changes of adolescence and strategies to promote effective decision-making and civic-mindedness. Through Action Research, Kirwan State High School has evaluated the impact on student learning of an explicit global perspective approach to the Human Technologies Curriculum. |
