Global Citizenship Education: A passport to social cohesion
Informing, inspiring and empowering educators to teach for social cohesion and global citizenship
The ‘Global Citizenship Education: A passport to social cohesion’ program is the GLC’s flagship program that aims to build social cohesion and promote global citizenship throughout Queensland schools and other educational institutions.
It does this by equipping educators of young people under 25 years with the knowledge, resources and engagement strategies they need to teach social cohesion and global citizenship and promote and apply Global Citizenship Education (GCE) as both a school-wide agenda and in classroom practice.
The program was first delivered to educators across Queensland in 2017, and following its success, the GLC has received further funding from the Department of Communities, Disability Services and Seniors to continue this important work.
“Courses like this allow teachers to reflect on their own beliefs and develop strategies for equipping students with empathy and respect for others so that our society can work better in the future. School leaders also need to have an understanding of this and promote this within their staff.” (Fiona)
How is the program delivered?
Aligned with the Queensland Government’s Thriving Cohesive Communities Action Plan 2019–2021, the program is delivered via three key program streams:
1. Free micro-credential in ‘Leading Education for Global Competence’
The ‘Leading Education for Global Competence’ micro-credential is designed to foster the global competence of educators and develop their understanding of the role of GCE in:
- promoting social cohesion, and
- fostering the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes students need to effectively engage in a globalised world.
Until 31 October 2021, Queensland educators in early years, primary and secondary settings can complete the micro-credential for free.
2. Global Leaders Development Program
The Global Leaders Development Program provides a unique opportunity for middle leaders in early years settings and primary and secondary schools to access a fully funded professional development experience with leaders in the GCE field.
3. Building capacity of local youth groups
The GLC is actively engaging with Youth Councils and Community Development Officers across regional Queensland to engage young people in conversation about diversity, inclusion and social cohesion via the High Resolves Videos for Change online program.
This program guides young people through a structured process to create impactful, shareable short films to build empathy and inspire action.
“You have broadened my horizon of information and understanding. I feel more inspired about supporting my future students.” (Program Participant)
